Lesson 1: The Purpose of the Church
Lesson 1: The Purpose of the Church ๐ฏ
Introduction: The Central Focus ๐
Welcome, dear friends! Today we delve into the very heart of the Christian faithโthe purpose of the Church. Why does the Church exist, and what should be its core focus? ๐ค
Main Point: Worship and Glorification of God ๐
Scripture Foundation:
Revelation 4:11 โ "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."
John 4:23-24 โ "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth."
1689 LBCF: Chapter 22, Paragraph 5 [1]
The Confession teaches that the acceptable way of worshiping the true God is instituted by God Himself. Worship not prescribed in Holy Scripture is not to be used in the worship of God.
Worship: The Heartbeat of the Church ๐
God created us for His glory, and He is worthy of all adoration. Worship is not merely a Sunday activity but the heartbeat of the Church. ๐ถ
Scripture: Psalm 29:2 โ "Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness."
The Essence of True Worship ๐๏ธ
John 4:23-24 lays out that true worship must be "in Spirit and in truth." Worship isn't about external rituals but a heartfelt communion with God. ๐
Scripture: Romans 12:1 โ "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of Godโs mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to Godโthis is your true and proper worship."
Engaging in Corporate Worship ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ฆโ๐ฆ
Worship isn't an individualistic endeavor; it is something we engage in as a congregation.
Scripture: Hebrews 10:24-25 โ "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another."
Hymn ๐ต
To conclude, let's lift our voices in singing "Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty," a hymn that encapsulates the awe and reverence due to our magnificent God. [2] Sing along with the embedded video below.
I pray this lesson deeply enriches your understanding and practice of worship, anchoring you in the marvelous glory of God. ๐
Footnotes:
[1]: Chapter 22, Paragraph 5 of the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith discusses worship. The Confession cites the Bible texts Matthew 15:9; Deuteronomy 12:32 to indicate that acceptable worship is only what is instituted by God Himself in the Scriptures.
